I recently had the opportunity to use the new Harpia 85mm scope in the field for a few months; no better way to evaluate a scope.
Zeiss is well known for their excellent, high quality optics. The new Harpia 85 with its magnesium alloy construction keeps the scope lighter and more compact compared to an 85mm scope of a few years back. It is a fraction over 15 inches long and a touch over 68 oz. I found it easy to handle and the weight reasonable.
The FL lenses and other specialty manufactured glass results in a razor-sharp image and natural color transmission that Zeiss has been known for.
As with many other Zeiss optics the scope has the LotuTec® hydrophobic lens coating that helps shed raindrops and dirt to improve viewing in poor weather conditions. I always had clear, sharp and superb views.

The eyepiece provides a zoom range of 22 to 65 power. However, I think a more beneficial range would be 15 to 55 power. However, I do not know of a large scope/eyepiece that offers this range. I find that even a 20 x is more power than I want when I am scanning a group of shorebirds, gulls, and terns. But some people who may be purchasing this scope primarily for long distance viewing will not be disappointed. The optical quality of the eyepiece is of the highest standard. I like that it has a lockable bayonet type mount. Many newer scopes include this and many older scope lacked this safety feature.

Zeiss has introduced a new dual speed focusing mechanism. This system is said to provide an “automatic gear switch between fast and fine focusing drive”. However, my experience with this systems did not rise to the level of quality that I associate with Zeiss products. My experience was that the focusing was less accurate than all other focusing system that I have experienced with other scopes. The drive system felt sloppy, required more back and forth movement of the focus wheel and more concentration to achieve a fine and accurate focus on a bird. Simply put, noticeably more time required to get a precise focus on a bird. This is the only drawback that I noticed in this scope. Perhaps with more time I would adapt to it or others may not have this experience.

If you are looking for an excellent large size scope, I would say consider the Harpia but also check out others and to pay special attention to the focus system to determine that it works well for you.
